How to Boost SMS ROI with Smart Segmentation (Without Burning Your List)

But don't worry there is an easy fix! 

Follow these simple strategies and you'll maximize your potential:

Why Engagement Drops as Your SMS List Grows

As your list gets bigger, engagement usually starts to drop.

This means less people clicking, and worse delieverability.

Look, some people brag about how they have 90% click rates... it's mostly because their list is teeny tiny and consists of their best friend and their mom.

My mom opens 100% of the emails and texts I send her cause she loves me. That's an abnormal amount of love.

Once you have 500k people+ on your list.... not everyone is going to love you the same way!

As your list grows, some people drop off:

  1. They aren't in the market for the solution anymore
  2. They are busy with other things
  3. They miss your message
  4. They meant to signup but forgot....

Or sometimes if you don't hit your list consistently... people forget who you are!

Lots of things happen....

But this is all normal and is the nature of big sending!

There are a few tricks you can do to keep your engagement and ROI high

The Power of Segmenting Your Broadcasts

The fist thing to do is start segmenting your list more.

Segmenting (in this context) means sending to smaller, more targeted portions of your list vs. everyone all at once.

This means sending:

  • The right MESSAGE
  • To the right PEOPLE
  • At the right TIME

You can easily do this in Roezan by using Lists, Tags, and Broadcast segments.

Here's an example of how to do this in reality:

Send Less "Big" Broadcasts, More Small (Segmented) Broadcasts

If you're hitting your whole list for every single broadcast and your CTRs aren't where you want it to be (10%+) - this likely means your list health is suboptimal.

At this point I suggest starting to split up your broadcasts into different types of sends:

Hit the "big list" - the list of all contacts less frequently, say 1-2X per month.

Then send MORE broadcasts to smaller segments - People who click / show interest, people who opt-in etc.

You can do this by creating "lists" in Roezan.

For example, you might have one big list of all your contacts, and smaller lists of 'Engaged / Clickers" or people who signed up for the webinar this week.

How To Create An "Engaged" SMS List / Segment

A GREAT way to get an active segment is to build a list of contacts that are actively clicking on your links.

The great thing about Roezan is that if you use our built-in link shortener, you can easily track anyone who is engaged.

The simplest way is to setup a very simple automations that applies a tag "clickers" to anyone who clicks any link, and turn it on.

(You could alternatively add these to a "Engaged" list instead of a tag if you'd like.)

This means you'll start creating a segment of contacts who you know are clicking your links.

This is a highly engaged segment that you KNOW will bring you above average clicks!

Sample Monthly Segmenting Schedule

Here's an example of how you could run a campaign that uses segments vs. hitting the whole list every time.

In this example you can see that instead of sending to the whole 50k list every time, and using up 50k x 6 broadcasts = 300,000 messages....

...We hit more efficient segmented lists based on expressed interest.

  1. Invite:The fist messages "Invite" went to the All Contacts list at the beginning.
  2. Follow Up Invite: This ONLY goes to the engaged contacts list, aka a list of people who have previously clicked on links before. This can also capture people who clicked on the first invite but never actually signed up. This also excludes registrants because they already registered!
  3. Reminder 1 Day: Only going to registrant list, people that expressed interest alread
  4. Reminder 1 Hour: Only going to registrant list, people that expressed interest already
  5. Reminder Starting Now: The most important text! Going only to the registrants.
  6. Replay / Offer Close: Again, only going to people who signed up. Often, you don't want people seeing your offer that haven't gone through the marketing process.
